While physical techniques are essential, knowing how to use words effectively can often prevent conflicts from turning violent.

 

In a verbal self-defence scenario, the key is to remain calm and assertive. Avoid aggressive or confrontational language, as it can escalate tensions. Instead, use clear and firm communication to set boundaries and assert your desire to avoid conflict. 

 

Here are some verbal self-defence strategies:

Assertive Communication: Speak confidently and directly, using “I” statements to express your feelings and needs. For example, say, “I feel uncomfortable with this situation, and I would like to leave,” rather than using accusatory language.

 

De-escalation Techniques: Try to understand the other person’s perspective and find common ground. Use phrases like, “I can see where you’re coming from” or “Let’s find a solution together.”

 

Setting Boundaries: Clearly state your boundaries and what you are willing or unwilling to tolerate. Be assertive but respectful in expressing your limits.
